CARRIGAN Family History
Recorded in a wide variety of spellings including Carrigan, Courigan, Corrigan, Currigan and Carrocan, this is an Irish surname of great antiquity. Deriving from the Gaelic form of O' Corragain, the name like many Irish surnames is a form of descriptive nickname. It translates as "The descendant of the kin of Corra", the latter being an early pre 7th century baptismal name meaning "Spear". My maternal grandmother was Helen (Ellen) Carrigan. She was born in Black Lion, County Cavan the daughter of Rose Wynne and Phillip Carrigan. At some point her family moved to farmed at Carricknagow, Killanagh, Cavan. I have done as thorough a search as I can online. In Griffiths Valuation 1857 I find her father Philip, and five other Carrigan men farming. Their names are Murtagh (Mortimer), John, James, Michael and Patrick. I am wondering if there is any way I can prove or disprove a relationship among or between any of these men?
Philip Carrigan's children were: Philip, Charles, Bridget, Mary, Margaret and Ellen (aka Helen). Philip came to the US (where he was known as Pat) as did Bridget, and Helen. I know that Charles and Margaret remained in Ireland. I believe Mary also remained in Ireland.

I am in search of the family of Patrick Carrigan. He is my immigrant ancestor. I know he is my 3 x grandfather I know he was Irish born and was married in Philadelphia in 1845. I know many details of his life in Philadelphia. What I do not know is when he arrived, what ship he was on, who he traveled with, where he came from in Ireland, did he meet family in Philadelphia? I know he had two sisters. Did they all sail together? Before the famine? Because of the famine? I don’t know and I’ve exhausted many resources in and around Philadelphia trying to find out. Patrick Carrigan - was he married to Bridget O'Reilly? If so, he is my ancestor as well. My family still lives in Philadelphia today. I thought he drowned at sea, but their son Michael Carrigan immigrated. I believe Michael was born in Scotland though family's roots are County Mayo.
