GORDON Family History
This famous surname, with spellings of Gordon, Gorden and Gourdon, is of locational origins. It is Scottish from Gordon in Berwickshire, or Anglo-French from Gourdon in the departement of Saone-et-Loire, France. The former was so called from the Olde Gaelic "gor", meaning large or spacious, plus "dun", a fort and the surname was first recorded in the mid 12th Century, (see below). Adam de Gurdun, recorded in the Pipe Rolls of Hampshire dated 1204, is believed to have come from the French town, so called from the Gallo-Roman personal name Gordus, plus the locational suffix "-on(is)". One, Geoffrey Gurdun appears in the Curia Rolls of Kent, dated 1220 and an Adam Gordon in the 1279 "Hundred Rolls of Cambridgeshire"...Select Audience

Gordon
My name is Robert Gordon and I have tracked my ancestry back to John Gordon born in County Mayo around 1824. He emigrated to the U.S. at some point, settling in the town of Clinton in Massachusetts and marrying Winnifred Sweeney there, also of Ireland, in 1847. He served in the 25th Massachusetts Infantry during the Civil War but was discharged after about a year of service for disability due to consumption and died a month later. (I believe his parents were John and Mary of County Mayo. Such common names makes them hard to track.) I descend through his Son Michael, one of their 9 total children. They were Mill Workers in Massachusetts. Michael (born in America) and Hannah Jennings (born in Ireland) had John Francis Gordon who Married Martha Cruikshank who had my Grandfather Vinson James Gordon, Sr., my Father being Vinson, Jr. I would love to correspond with anyone who may have more knowledge of the Gordon's in County Mayo.

(Part 1 of 3) The Gordon name is from Scotland, but its origin according to DNA is from the north-west coast of the Emerald Island. The Gordon story [dominated by DNA tribal marker R1b-L513, Subgroup A1] can trace their origins to the Finn Valley in Donegal, Ireland from 50 BCE. Perhaps the journey begins with the Clanna Dedad; Deda, son of Sen or Deda Mac Sin. The Gordon surname origin is from a Northern Ui Neill [R1b-L513] tribe. The Cenél Eoghan and the tribes of Donegal conquered much of Ulster (Derry and Tyrone).

(Part 2 of 3) Cenél Eoghan will expand across northern Ireland with their cousins Cenél Conaill and the Northern Ui Neill between 500-800 BCE. The clans of Finn Valley have the same DNA as people from Gwened in Brittany. But how could this be? Recent discoveries from DNA testing are unlocking the migration patterns of Celtic tribes as late as 800 CE to 1200 CE. The Gordon story begins in pre-history Ireland then moves to Scotland as they form part of the Dalriada. Descendants of their tribe will then travel to Brittany, France during the Dark Ages.
