GRADY Family History
This notable name, with variant spellings O'Grady, O'Grada and the rarer form Gready, is an Anglicized form of the Old Gaelic "O' Gradaigh". The Gaelic prefix "O" indicated "male descendant of", plus the personal byname "Gradaigh", from "grada", the illustrious one. This sept belonged to the Dal gCais (otherwise known as the Dalcassians), embracing the main septs of Thomond, an ancient territory comprising most of County Clare, with adjacent parts of Counties Limerick and Tipperary. The seat and territory of the Chief of the Name was at Killballyowen, County Limerick. It is interesting to note that "The O'Grady" is one of the few whose claim to chieftainship is officially recognised in Ireland...Select Audience

Hi
My maiden name is Grady and I live in Scotland. I've recently started researching my family tree. My Father was Robert Grady 1917-1985 born and died in Johnstone, Renfrewshire. Robert married my mother Matilda McGoldrick in 1938 The had 15 children, 13 survived. His Father, my grandfather, was John Grady born on inisheeny island Co Mayo in 1867 and died in Johnstone, Renfrewshire in 1926. John Married my grandmother Mary Ward in 1892. They had 13 children who all survived. John's father, My Great Grandfather, was Patrick Grady born and died on inisheeny island, co Mayo 1831 - 1877. Patrick married my Great Grandmother Margaret Burke in Oughaval RC Parish in 1864. They had 6 children, 5 survived. Patrick's father was Thomas Grady and this is where my information is scarse. I believe Thomas married Mary Dunne? in Aglish RC parish Co Mayo in 1831 and had AT LEAST one other child, Judith/Julia born in or around 1825. Thomas had a brother James. They are both listed in Griffiths Report as living on inisheeny with their families. The family members fished and farmed to survive.
I am already in touch with some of my distant cousins from the James line but it would be great to link up with same from my Thomas line.
When my Great Grandfather Patrick died in 1877, Margaret Burke Gradywas pregnant with their 5th son. Later she brought her 5 sons to live in Scotland and settled in the Paisley area. Her sons were Martin 1865 -1922, John 1867-1926, Thomas 1869 - ?, Michael 1874 - ? and Patrick 1877 - 1941.
Im Searching for
confirmation of Thomas snr Wife
How many children they had
Where did Julia go to on leaving inisheeny? Her Husband? her children? Her death?
Thomas jnr and michael are thought to have deserted from the army and went to Canada before going to settle in USA...ANY information on either would be amazing.
Thats my ancestry.....as i Know it....thanks for any help/info that may come my way. Anne Marie Wilson
