The derivation is from the ancient word "greyve", meaning a steward, or originally a person in charge of estates or property, and itself a derivation of the pre 7th century Norse-Viking word "greifi". Grayson
John Temple Grayson, born c. 1830 (perhaps in Nottinghamshire); died 1904 in Cincinnati, OH. Was one of the wealthiest of the Northwest mine owners/managers in the mid-1800s; he lived in Portland, OR and San Francisco for many years; he also resided in Mexico and Texas at various times. He was married to the great-grandaughter of Francis Scott Key, as well as Evalyn Williamson and Ida Pinner. He was a colonel in the US Civil War. He was (allegedly) the first cousin of Frederick Temple, Archbishop of Canterbury. I have been unable to trace this connection or the names of his parents. Nothing seems to be available prior to his arrival in the United States in 1848. He also spent time in Sydney, Australia c. 1854.

John Temple Grayson born 1830 died 1904 in Ohio. He was a wealthy mine owner in Oregon, Mexico and Latin America.
JTG was alleged to have been born in Nottingham and is the first cousin to Frederick Temple, Archbishop of Canterbury. There is NO record of him prior to his arrival in the United States in 1848.

I am attempting to locate John Temple Grayson, supposedly born in Nottingham in 1830 or 1847 (there are different dates on different papers). He was allegedly a first cousin to Frederick Temple, Archbishop of Canterbury. He came to the United States, became wealthy from mines in Oregon, Mexico and Latin America. He lived a very colorful life--married three times. He died in 1904 in Cincinnati, OH. He is my second great-grandfather, but I have been unable to locate ANYTHING about him prior to his arrival in the US. I have not been able to find a connection with the Temple family, either. Any assistance you could give would be greatly appreciated. I believe his family may have originated in Donegal, but that's just a guess. Thank you in advance!
