GRIFFIN Family History
The surname "Griffin" has two primary Gaelic sources in Ireland, which pertain to the towns of Ballygriffey in Co. Clare, and Ballygriffin in Co. Kerry. The spelling "? Gr?obhtha" is associated with the Co. Clare family, whose surname was also anglicised as "O'Griffey" or "Griffey". "? Gr?obhtha" translates to English as "descendant of the Griffin-like". The "? Gr?f?n" spelling belongs to the Kerry family. In Ireland, the name can also be associated with the Norman surname "Griffith", but to a much lesser degree. The surname Griffin is of patronymic origin.Select Audience

The following Griffens, living on or near the Dingle Peninsula, received a pardon from Queen Elizabeth in 1601:
Donell m'Donogh Griffen,
Dermond m'Morrice Griffen,
Donogh m'Giollo Grifen,
Maurice m'Shane Griffen
The pardon is documented here: https://archive.org/details/reportofdeputyke1720irel/page/264/mode/2up?view=theater&q=griffen
Griffin is a common name on or around the Dingle Peninsula now and, all Griffins from that area who have been tested for Y Haplgroups at FTDNA have been determined to descend from men who left the Scottish Highlands some time around the 15th century. See this FTDNA group for reference: https://www.familytreedna.com/groups/griffith/about

Hi, I am from a line of Griffin’s who have lived in Newfoundland, Canada for that last 200 years or so. I think my family originated from Kerry, Ireland. Any distant cousins interested in helping me with my family tree?
Kevin Griffin
If a male Griffin has DNA analysis done by 23andme, currently they will assign the Scottish Highlander Y haplogroup R-S764 to members of Kerry Ireland origin Griffins. FTDNA Y-37 or Y-111 may help you find Griffin male-line relatives. FTDNA Big Y-700 testing can provide much greater detail and possibly genealogical certainty but is more expensive.

Great Grandparent's, Joseph Patrick and Catherine Griffin, Children-Catherine Warner (nee Griffin), Charlotte Sosnowski (nee Griffin), Gloria Wheller (nee Griffin), Sharon Taylor (nee Griffin), Joseph Griffin, Agnes Griffin, Godfrey Griffin and Thomas Griffin. They where located in Canada, I'm not sure of the ancestry, origin of that side of the family as they are all gone. I don't know anyone on that side of the family other than my siblings and their families. Many descendants across Canada and the lower US.
