KNOX Family History
This famous surname, much associated with the religious zealot John Knox (1505 - 1572) and with no less than three others also called John and also religious divines, can be of Scottish or English origins. In all cases it is either a topographical name for someone who lived on a hilltop, derived from the pre 7th century Old English word "cnocc" or the similar Gaelic "cnoc", both meaning a round topped hill, or it maybe locational from one of the various places called Knock found in both Scotland and Northern England. The surname is one of earliest on record, and dates back to the 13th century as shown below...Select Audience

I started my family tree searches via. the Ancestry website in 2012 and found this undated photo regarding my great-grandparents, James Finley and Elizabeth (Knox) Finley. The story that has been shared within my extended family is that these two met in the store owned by Elizabeth's family. I thought that Elizabeth was born in Dublin, but other trees on Ancestry are reflecting Kells, Meath. Based upon the year of birth of their first child, they probably got married about 1860...arrival in America was during the mid/late 1890's...in around Bayonne, Orange, and Newark, New Jersey. I created a facebook page in recent years "O'Neill and Finley Family Tree," and have connected/met cousins as a result.

My Grandmother was Elizabeth Jane Knox, she was born in Co Fermanagh Enniskillen,she married and Acheson Spink ( Acheson came from Co Wesmeath) they lived in Dublin.
I am trying to figure out her mum's side, she was Esther Thompson, she lived until about 1962 as far as I can gather, that was the last time in 1959 they were to see her, Mums brother Edmund Spink, Esther married a William Knox. They were from Northern Ireland, I really know not much about them at all. The whole Irish side of my family. I was told were were related to the Earls of Ranfurly and also to Dr David Livingstone.
Can anyone help me at all. I would adore knowing and not guessing and following out ancestry trees to find my heritage.

The Knox story [dominated by DNA tribal marker R1b-L513, Subgroup A1] can trace their origins to the Finn Valley in Donegal, Ireland from 50 BCE. Perhaps the journey begins with the Clanna Dedad; Deda, son of Sen or Deda Mac Sin. The Knox surname origin is from a Northern Ui Neill [R1b-L513] tribe. The Cenél Eoghan and the tribes of Donegal conquered much of Ulster (Derry and Tyrone).
