LEAHY Family History
Recorded in the spellings of O'Leahy, Leahy and Leahey in Counties Tipperary and Cork, and O'Lahy and Lahy in County Clare, this is an Irish surname of great antiquity. Generally to be found in the province of Munster, and in some numbers on the West Coast, the derivation is from the pre 12th century Gaelic word "laochda", which translates as "The heroic one". In the first instance the name was given to the chief of the clan, and it should be assumed that it was as a result of a battle, in which he distinguished himself. Sadly the event itself is lost in the mists of antiquity...Select Audience

David Leahy
I've done 15 years research on the Leahys if county cavan and written 2 books (The cavan leahys: Origins and The cavan leahys 1800-1940) available on Amazon.
Mary Jane Noreen Dickas,
For genealogical purposes, Our father, George W. Leahy was born in1893 in Brooklyn NY. He was the last surviving son of Nora Clifford Leahy and Timothy Leahy. Timothy arrived in the U.S. aboard an immigrant ship out of Liverpool in 1870, and the ship's manifest lists his age as 21 then. Nora Clifford arrived in NY at the age of 16 around 1872. I have no record of which counties in Ireland they lived in previously. Timothy was a day laborer and he died around 1915 in B'klyn. Nora (Honora) lived until 1932. also in B'klyn.

Hi Im trying to trace my Leahy ancestors but am not having much luck. My grandmother was born Catherine Mary Leahy in Middlesbrough,Yorkshire,England in December 1905.Her father John Leahy, he was also born in Middlesbrough in 1869,he married Mary Hagan in Middlesbrough in 1896, his marriage record shows his fathers as Jeremaie.I think the family came from Cork. The 1871 census shows a Jeremiah Leahey born 1839 in Ireland, he does not appear in the 1881 census, this census shows a Jeremiah Lahey born 1845 in Ireland. I dont know if either of these are the father of my John. Thanks
