Recorded as MacCallan, MacCallion, McCallan, MacCallion, McCallion, Callan and Callion, this is an Irish surname. it originates from the pre 10th century Gaelic O'Cathgalain, with the prefix O' indicating a male descendant of, plus the personal name Cathgalain, itself a compond of the elements "cath", meaning a battle, and "gal", brave and the diminutive suffix "an", to give "Little brave-battle" or similar. Almost all Irish patronymic surnames derives from the feats of valour of the first chief of the clan or sept, and this would seem to be a good example. Hello. I was born in Fife, Scotland, as was my father, but his own father was born in Glasgow, the son of emigrants born in Ireland. My Dad, my Grandad and my Great-Grandad were all named William John McCallion. My Grandad took my Dad to Ireland when he was small, to visit family in Killebegs, County Donegal. I'm hoping to go myself, so if there are any Killebegs McCallions out there, please let me know !

Hello,
My late father Brian Campbell McCallion the last male in his line, passed away in July 2015, at Nambour, Queensland, Australia.
His father was Leut Col Willian James McCallion, late of Beecroft, NSW, Australia, died in 1970's.
I would like to know more about our background in Ireland (and maybe Scotland?)
Hope you all are well and looking forward to a better 2021.
