TOLER Family History
Recorded as Toler, Toller and the north country Towler, this is an English medieval surname. It has two possible origins. The first is an early occupational surname for a toll taker or tax gatherer. The derivation is from the word 'toln', meaning a tax or payment, with the agent suffix -er, meaning "one who does". The ultimate origin of the word is Greek, from telos, and latinized as toloneum. William Langland (circa 1332-1400) wrote in the prologue to the famous book Piers Plowman, of "Taillours and tynkers and tollers in markettes". The second possible origin for the modern surname, is as a locational name from a place called Toller in the county of Dorset...Select Audience

James Toler
Greeting to All,
I am James E Toler Jr. as a young boy I was told of the family, how we once lived in a Castle in Ireland and came to America, the family had farms and slaves. I was told how my Great Grandfather moved from Virginia to Oklahoma with Maguires and and settled the family farm.
My father was able to see California when the family had to moved because of a great drought in the heartland of America, and he fell in love with the sea.
That is where I was raised, as the son of a Boat Builder.
I joined the US Army and was a Rescue Pilot among other occupations during my 29 year tenure. I now write music.
I look forward to some day soon seeing Ireland and meeting more of the clan.
