WHITTLE Family History
This name, with variant spellings Whittell and Whitel, is of English locational origin from any of the places thus called, for example Whittle le Woods and Welch Whittle in Lancashire, or either of two places called Whittle in Northumberland, one near Felton and the other in Ovingham. Recorded variously as Witul, Whittle, Whittall, Withull and Wythill in early 13th Century records of the above counties, the name derives from the Old English pre 7th Century 'hwit', meaning white, plus 'hyll', a hill.Select Audience

I'm doing some historical research into the Nags Head public house at Harby, Leicestershire, England.
I have listings of the Whittle family Ralph and Son John running the Public house from 1845. I am trying to establish the age of the building and how long it was in the family and who they purchased it from.

My Grandfather ,Charles Whittle, emigrated to the US by way of Canada in the early 20th century. He was born in Bolton,Lancashire ,UK. My DNA profile traces back primarily to Ireland ,however. Specifiaclly Sligo and No. Roscommon. M GF never spoke of Irish heritage. so I'm interested in finding this strong but lost Irish connection.
