This most interesting surname, is a County Cork variant of "Cosgrave", which is the Anglicized form of the Gaelic name "O'Coscraigh", meaning the male descendant (O) of Coscrach, a Gaelic nickname meaning "victorious, triumphant" (from "coscur", victory, triumph). The sept originally were settled in Clones, County Monaghan. Another sept of the same name, often Anglicized as Cosker, is found in south-east Leinster particularly around north Wicklow, near Bray. The name is also found as Cosgrove in Ulster and Connacht. The original Gaelic version of the surname first appeared in records in the late 10th Century. Benedictus O'Cascry, of the Connacht sept was Bishop of Killaloe until he died in 1325...Select Audience

Cosgrove
My second great grandmother, Margaret Cosgrove (1825-1890) came over from County Cork to Glen Mills, Pennsylvania in 1850. She married Cornelius Corcoran (who I believe is also from County Cork but I don’t have documentation) and they had seven children. Needless to say, the family has grown from there. My husband and I are coming to Ireland in late May. We would love to meet relatives and see where my grandmother was born. Her baptismal certificate says the family address was Hollyhill.

As the story goes, my Cosgrove family decided to leave Ireland sometime during the potato famine. Supposedly the family lived near the "Vale of the Avoca". It was decided to have the father and eldest son Patrick and Thomas) go to America to find work and a good place to live. They wound up in Michigan's upper peninsula in what is referred to a "Copper Country" and worked as Miners for the Minnesota Mining Company. They set up living in Ontonagon County, in the city of Rockland.
