McGloin Family History
Recorded in many spelling forms including McGlynn, McGloin, and McGlone, as well as short forms without any prefix, this is an Irish surname. It derives from the pre 10th century Gaelic "Mag Fhloinn", from the elements "Mag" a variant form of Mac or Mc, and "flann", meaning ruddy, and probably given as a nickname to someone of a healthy reddish colour. The main sept of Mag Fhloinn originated in the the counties of Westmeath and Roscommon, from where it spread west of the Shannon, and even as far north as County Donegal. Glynn is also of Welsh origin, from "de Glin", but it is seldom the source of the name in Ireland...Select Audience

Michael McGloin
Grew up in Salthill Co. Galway, family was from Swinford Co. Mayo. Still have family living in the home place in Cloonfinaune, Swinford Co. Mayo. Lots of McGloin's in Co. Sligo & up into Donegal. Just moved to South Carolina from Colorado, where I was for about 34 years. Originally came to San Francisco in 1988.

The McGloin family originated from a Celtic Irish tribe. They were chieftains in their tribe. The Irish name originated as Mac Giolla Eoin, which means son of the servant of Eoin. Eoin was once a high king of Ireland and started the kingdom of the north in Tyrone. Tyrone translates to Tír Na Eoin => The kingdom of Eoin. Our family became noble knights after the defeat of their tribe for the high king of Ireland. I hope this clears things up a little!

Hi, my name is Louise McGloin. My grandpa was Gilbert McGloin I don’t know much about his family only my grans side the McShanes and Blair but my Granpa Gilbert not so much I know he was from Ireland hence my dual passport but I don’t know if I maybe have any other family out there? It would be nice to hear since even Scotland McGloin is such a rare name here.
