Firstly, it may derive from the Old English pre 7th Century word "purs" meaning purse, and would have originated as an occupational surname for someone who made or sold purses and bags or who may have been a treasurer of a royal or noble house, an official in charge of the expenditure. However when recorded in Scotland it is a developed form of the ancient Gaelic Mac Sparain meaning son of Sparan, a byname which means "purse".Select Audience
